Aminalon is the pharmaceutical preparation of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Most of the anxiolytic drugs used today works by enhancing GABAergic neurotransmission.
Orally administered GABA has poor blood-brain permeability unlike its phenyl derivative Phenibut. However, GABA metabolites are able to reach the brain and produce a therapeutic effect. The drug has nootropic, antihypoxic, and anticonvulsant action and is used to treat variety of neurological disorders.
The indications for Aminalon use are:
- Cerebrovascular disorders and traumatic brain injuries sequelae
- Organic brain syndrome
- Arteriosclerotic, hypertensive, and alcohol encephalopathies
- Adjunctive therapy of cerebral palsy and birth injuries
- Developmental delays in children
- Motion sickness
