Phenotropil (Phenylpiracetam) is a Russian nootropic drug with stimulant action.

Phenotropil was developed in 1983 in the Soviet Union as a performance enhancer for astronauts. Currently, it is used in Russia as an anti-asthenic drug, which means it is intended to relieve chronic fatigue.

By its chemical structure, phenylpiracetam is a derivative of Piracetam (a reference nootropic drug) with phenyl ring added. This difference in chemical structure significantly improved the ability of this particular racetam to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and reach the brain.

Phenotropil does have pronounced antiamnesic, neuroprotective, and stimulant properties and is also shown to possess moderate anxiolytic activity, unlike common stimulants which often cause anxiety.

The official indications for use are:

  • Decreased memory and attention
  • Fatigue
  • Mild and moderate depression
  • Central nervous system dysfunctions followed by cognitive impairments and decrease of motor activity
  • Obesity
  • Symptomatic treatment of chronic alcoholism

Professional athletes also should note than Phenotropil is included on WADA list of prohibited substances
