Phenibut (beta-phenyl-GABA) is a Russian anxiolytic, which is also known under the trade name of Noofen. The drug was developed in 1960’s in the Soviet Union as a non-sedative tranquilizer for astronauts, since most tranquilizers used back then would impair their performance.
By its structure, Phenibut is a phenyl derivative of gamma-aminobutyric acid, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Unlike GABA itself, Phenibut is able to penetrate the blood brain barrier and reach the brain when administered orally, thus producing an anxiolytic effect.
Phenibut is one of the most potent Russian anxiety drugs and is often used recreationally. Because of its huge recreational potential, some people take Phenibut at excessive dosages long-term. Such abuse may cause withdrawal syndrome after cessation, please follow instruction when taking Phenibut.
