Mexidol (Emoxypine succinate) is a Russian nootropic drug with a primarily antioxidant action. It was developed in the Soviet Union in 1980’s and is currently being used in Russian medicine to treat various neurological conditions as well as some cardiac disorder.
Mexidol has anxiolytic, nootropic, antioxidant, and neuroprotective action. The neuroprotective effect of Emoxypine is mediated by its ability to inhibit free radical oxidation and increase the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes. The drug is also shown to restore the sensitivity of acetylcholine and GABA receptors to their endogenous ligands, thus producing anxiolytic and nootropic effects.
One of the most important properties of Mexidol is its ability to mitigate the neurological manifestations of alcohol intoxication.
